Just as a physician would not treat a patient without first doing a history and physical, Jon begins a typical client engagement with a snapshot assessment of the current state. The 'history' for the organization consists of a series of interviews/focus groups. Interview data is compiled and presented to the leadership group during a session designed to create clarity re the current state, the desired future state, and the roadmap to get from one to the other.
Priority opportunities for moving to the desired future state are the basis for chartering design teams consisting of cross-functional groups of 'best and brightest' people closest to the work. Participating on the design teams is a leadership development opportunity based on solving the real-world challenge of a vexing organizational issue. In addition to designing solutions that address target opportunities, the design team creates an implementation plan based on engaging/involving the rest of the organization.
Using an organizational systems approach, design teams have variously recommended streamlined work processes, organizational restructuring, improvements to information management, improvements to talent management, and better alignment of rewards to desired outcomes. Many design team participants have gone on to significant career advancements/leadership roles.
